The Easter holidays are almost upon us, and for many parents and kids, the Easter weekend is typically fun-filled and action-packed, with plenty of chocolate to boot!
And even though this year may not be quite the same as previous Easters, with the slight lifting in lockdown restrictions and (hopefully) sunnier weather, there are tonnes of ways you can keep the kids occupied. To help you get prepped for the long-weekend ahead, we’ve compiled our ultimate list of activities for you and your children that can all be done on a budget:
Whatever the weather, egg decorating is the perfect traditional Easter activity for the whole family, and they are great for getting your home decked-out ready for Easter. First, you’ll need to prepare your eggs – some people decide to hard-boil the eggs and let them cool (just don’t eat them afterwards or leave them out for too long), or you could blow the eggs out of the shells. BBC Good Food has a great step-by-step guide for this if you haven’t got it down already.
And now for the fun part – the decorating! There are loads of great ideas out there that your kids are guaranteed to love; from these brilliant emoji eggs by Studio DIY and these beautiful watercolour eggs by The Way We Waldorf, to The Best Ideas for Kids’ fantastic silhouette eggs and whipped cream painted eggs (yes, you heard us right – whipped cream!). However your kids choose to design their eggs, they’ll make a great addition to any Easter decorations you have, and are always a fun way for the whole family to get involved with some crafts.
Easter crafts don’t just have to involve painting eggs: there are lots of brilliant ways your kids can get creative over the long weekend!
We love these beautiful and simple Easter bonnet decoration ideas from Activity Village or these fun bunny party hats from Lars, which are sure to help you and your kids look the part for Easter. Prima also has some brilliant crafting suggestions, including cute Easter bunny cards and pom pom egg cards that you can make and send to your loved-ones.
And if Easter baskets are something your children are keen to create, we think Mrs Mactivity’s super simple folded paper baskets are perfect for all ages!
Easter is the perfect occasion to treat yourself to some delicious sweet treats, so why not get making your own – not only is it a cost-effective activity, but it’s a great chance for your little ones to have a go at refining their culinary skills.
BBC Good Food has a range of recipe ideas, and we especially love the chocolate fudge Easter cakes and Easter brownie bites, which are ideal for any chocolate-lovers! And, as a go-to Easter tradition for many, we can’t forget yummy chocolate Easter nests, perfect for kids of all ages: take a look at Cooking with my Kids’ recipe if you’re after a step-by-step guide. But if chocolate isn’t your or your kids’ cup of tea, delicious magazine’s Easter biscuit recipe is a great alternative baking idea, and decorating biscuits is always fun for kids to help with!
Now that restrictions are easing a little bit, you can celebrate the Easter weekend with a fun-filled garden party, with one other household (or up to six people). A picnic with the grandparents could be a great way to wind down and enjoy some spring weather and celebrate Easter, or you could have an Easter games afternoon with family or friends – whether it’s an Easter egg hunt in a local park or your garden, or an egg rolling race with some decorated eggs, there’s loads of fun you and your kids can have outdoors this weekend!
However you choose to spend your Easter, there’s lots of fun to be had for the whole family! It’s the perfect time to get stuck into plenty of seasonal activities and crafts, all while enjoying the wonderful Spring weather – we hope you all have a very happy Easter.
